Is the online coin flip fair?
Yes. Each flip is decided by your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, giving heads and tails an exact 50/50 chance. Previous flips have no influence on the next one, so a streak of five heads does not make tails "due".
When to flip a coin
- Deciding who goes first in a game or match.
- Choosing between two options when you can't pick.
- Teaching probability: flip ten or more times and watch the tally approach, but rarely exactly match, 50/50.
With more than two choices, use the random name picker or the spin the wheel. For more outcomes, try the dice roller.
Frequently asked questions
Can I flip several coins at once?
Use Flip 10 times to flip ten coins and see how many came up heads and tails. The counters keep a running total until you reset.
Why do I sometimes get long streaks?
Streaks are normal in true randomness. In 100 flips, a run of six or more of the same side is quite likely.
Is this better than a real coin?
It is at least as fair, and real coins can be very slightly biased depending on how they are flipped. It also works when you don't have any change.
